 Mobile EEG

Cognitive experiments in the last decades mostly took place in indoor lab environments. Subjects were placed in front of a computer and were instructed to minimize body movements during the EEG measurement. In the next decades, many of these experiments will move from the traditional lab to situations where the mobility of subjects is a major requirement.

Professor Mike d`Zmura from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) made the step from indoor lab measurements to outdoor experiments. ANT developed a solution for him and his collaborators that increased the mobility of the subjects extremely.
Mobile EEG
The solution consists of a completely mobile EEG system including a 64 channel ASA-lab amplifier, Waveguard Cap, a battery and a notebook integrated in a robust and comfortable backpack. Shock absorbing material was used to protect the equipment for vibrations and or shocks. This allows users to wear the system during walking, running, cycling, jumping or any other activity that involves movement. Above that the active shielding in the ASA-lab amplifier and Waveguard cap reduces artifacts caused by cable movements to a minimum.

Prof. d`Zmura uses the system as a part of his research on using brain-computer interfaces in military, medical, and commercial settings. The backpack EEG which was developed specially for University of California, Irvine includes a powerful Sager notebook to have an amazing computing power available for his BCI applications. Furthermore, the sturdy, yet comfortable design enables the users to use the system in extreme environments. Users that are interested in only writing EEG data to file could also use smaller notebooks making the complete solution even easier to wear. Please contact sales@ant-neuro.com if you are also interested in making the move to mobile EEG.

Written by Ruud Kalis, many thanks to prof. Mike d`ZMura and his lab members, especially John Hagedorn for sharing photo and video material of the system in action.
